Governing Body

Welcome to our Governors’ section

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.

A message from the Chair of Governors

As part of the Federation of Newent Schools, Glebe Infants and Picklenash Juniors have continued to go from strength to strength.

Working as a proactive and evaluative unit, the Governing Body and Senior Leadership Team have been rigorous and relentless in their pursuit of raising school standards and as a result, both Glebe Infants and Picklenash Juniors are reaping the rewards in all areas and are now providing first class primary education in a nurturing and happy environment.

The “Good” judgements awarded to both schools in the most recent Ofsted inspection were testimony to the hard work of all members of staff and governors in pursuit of raising standards. However, we consider this only as a milestone in our development as we shall continue to develop and enhance the education and school experiences for our children. It is particularly pleasing to see that the high quality of teaching and best practice within our schools has now been recognised and is shared among and modelled by other schools within the county.

This past year has continued to be very challenging as the schools implemented appropriate safe practice to combat the coronavirus, managed the closure of class bubbles and coped with a second shutdown. Even so the teaching of reading, writing and maths and providing the children with the best possible school experience remain at the heart of what the schools are trying to achieve and remembering the six school values has proved invaluable for the children during the crisis.

Despite the challenges, the Governing Body has continued to monitor the intent, implementation and impact of all the key areas within school. The health, safety and wellbeing of all children, staff and our school community has been at the front and centre of our thinking, with the necessary provision being put in place for pupils to catch-up on lost learning also being a high priority. A pdf document with the 2020/21 Governance Statement can be found below.

Our Governing Body is made up of diverse and highly committed individuals who all want to see the very best for our children. My own background is in business and although there may be little direct connection to education, some of the most important aspects for the working of a governing body are the same: strategic planning, financial acumen and the comprehension of data, policies and protocol.

As somebody not officially trained in education, it is exciting to see therefore just how passionate the staff and governors of our federation are about delivering the highest standards of education. As our school motto says: we aim to Prepare our children for a life of learning and opportunity, to Progress them towards achieving their full potential and to teach them to Prevail in the face of all challenges.

Being a school governor is a fantastic way to help the schools to move forwards. We currently have a vacancy for a co-opted governor, for which no prior skills are necessary, just the time and enthusiasm to be an effective governor. Furthermore, we are always looking for others to join us with appropriate skills as an associate member. Associates take part in the activities of the Governing Body and their opinions and thoughts are equally valuable, the major difference being they do not have a voting right in decisions made by the Governing Body.

If you feel you would like to share any expertise you may have including your ideas and opinions, then we would love to hear from you. I can be contacted at chair@newentfed.org .
